President Sirisena of Sri Lanka inspected the Port City Colombo Project on September 20. He was accompanied by the following: Champica - Minister of Metropolitan and Western Development of Sri Lanka and related government officials of Sri Lanka, his Excellency Cheng Xueyuan – the Chinese ambassador to Sri Lanka, Zhang Xiaoqiang – President Assistant and General Manager of Sri Lanka Regional Company of CHEC and Jiang Houliang – Vice Chief Engineer of CHEC and General Manager of Port City Colombo Project Company.
President Sirisena inspected the exhibition hall of the Port City Colombo project, listened to the report on its launching phase, and deeply discussed its next development. He said that Sri Lanka is one of the first countries to respond to China's "Belt and Road" Initiative. He will instruct relevant departments to proceed with relevant work and join hands with China to build the port city project into a new engine for the economic and social development of Sri Lanka. In recent years, fruitful results were yielded in the bilateral economic and trade cooperation between China and Sri Lanka. During his visit to China in May, the both parties agreed to promote major bilateral cooperation projects, such as the port city project, in accordance with the principle of giving precedence to planning and legislation.
His Excellency Cheng Xueyuan stressed that the port city project is in a critical window period of development. He hoped that Sri Lanka would seize the opportunity, earnestly implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of both countries, solve the major issues concerning the long-term development of the project, such as the legislation related to the port city, and make the project bear fruits early for the benefit of both countries and peoples.
At the end of the event, President Sirisena inscribed words for the port city project, and Jiang Houliang presented souvenirs to President Sirisena on behalf of Port City Colombo Project Company.
Relevant staffs from the Sri Lankan government, the Chinese embassy in Sri Lanka and the Port City Project Company were also present at the occasion.
